Elbow Cay Elbow Cay is a six mile long island within the Abaco Islands. It is situated 4 miles to the east of Marsh Harbour and is protected from the Atlantic surf by coral reefs. The island is well known for snorkeling, diving, boating, and fishing. The main settlement on the island is Hope Town, the first landing place of Loyalists fleeing America during the American Revolution. The Harbour is well protected, a popular mooring spot for sailboats and yachts and is overseen by the iconic candy striped lighthouse. Its main harbour shelters the settlement of Hope Town, but a second harbor lies to the south of the island known as White Sound.
Hope Town is a colorful rainbow of pastel villas, cottages, and quaint beach homes. No two homes share the exact same color scheme. Every home has its own personal name and most are tributes to nautical and tropical themes. A popular stop off for boaters as well as a permanent mooring for the more serious sailor, Hope Town attracts a wide variety of people from all over the globe beyond those who stay on land. Of the original Loyalist families who landed here years ago, many descendants remain today, continuing the history their ancestors set forth. The Wayne-Malone History Museum is right across the street from Windward and provides a variety of artifacts, household items, flotsam and jetsam, photographs and family heirlooms provided by locals and provides a fun and interesting filled day learning the history of the island and it's history of pillaging ship wrecks. As the most iconic figure on Elbow Cay, the candy striped lighthouse is a historical piece in and of itself. Built in 1862, it is one of only three remaining kerosene lit, manually operated lighthouses in the world. The lighthouse is open for tours, allowing folks to climb the 101 steps to the top and view a 360 degree panoramic scene of the entirety of Elbow Cay and some of its surrounding islands. |
